Modern ladies in their early 20s are already at the stage of preparation for the onslaught of pigments in this hot climate of Singapore. They are armed with sunscreen, sunblock, vitamin E supplements and so on. So what have you done for yourself lately?

Most common cause of pigments in different age groups consists of caused by excessive production of melanin (colour pigment) in the body.

The “Youthful” stage – The love for outdoor activities. Yes those who loves to beach party, you might enjoy it now but your skin texture and elasticity will wear down and therefore you would be prone to tiny brown pigments especially around the cheeks and bridge of the nose.  Pigments cause by the sun can be removed with perhaps some lightening cream containing Arbutin and niacinamade. I had a client who had two huge patches of pigments around the cheeks because of 6 hours of golf under the hot sun almost every weekend with no hat or sunblock!

The “Mature” stage – Caused by the pregnancy and hormonal changes.  This is the sacrifice that women have to make when we want to have children. Sorry ladies, if age catches up, we have to face the reality. Some times, pigment might be caused by the liver damage because the liver is no longer in the condition to cleanse the blood in the body. The body becomes “unhealthy” ; we age faster and pigments will show in the long run. In these cases, solutions come in the form of miracle creams Alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) and laser.

Recently there is a rise of male clients visiting my salon. Their utmost concern? Acne scarring. How are they formed and what can we do about it?

During the formation of an acne cyst (the huge red ones), the neck of the sebaceous gland expands and it being filled up by cells and bacteria which are unable to pass through the skin’s surface. Eventually when the cyst ruptures, these bacteria will be deposited into the pore, reaching the (deeper) dermis layers where they will be attacked by white blood cells responsible for fighting infection. This inflammation results in the loss of tissue as the collagen which forms the support structure of the skin is destroyed. And this is when scarring occur, resulting in pockmark face (like dents on the skin).

Solutions to scars

However it requires some investments. Beauty salons and dermatologists offer a wide range of treatments. To name a few, Intense-Pulse Light (IPL), dermabrasion, dermal fillers etc. Please read up on this before visiting the professionals so that they will not be selling you short-term solutions base on your sense of urgency. Do not expect an overnight miracle, because these miracles might do more harm to your skin in the long-run. Be patient and give yourself some time for the treatments to work for you. Also, remember that in-take of vitamin C (found in fruits and filled with anti-oxidants) helps to lighten the scarring in the long -run. Again as prescribed on the bottle.

fondaG2201_468x680When I hit 25, I noticed the changes in my body. My skin tone is not that bright and elastic. Once I hit 28, fine lines seemed more noticable and I am prone to having pigments. I welcome them with open arms, because I embrace my age. For those of you who are not ready in getting there, take care of yourself.

1) Breasts. This is serious. Your boobs will feel saggy. Do massages and bench presses whenever you are free so as to keep those glands active. Most of all, get a bra that provides enough support and not because it is “pretty”. Protect y0ur precious. There is only 1 set. Fake ones will never feel the same.

2) Your skin loses its elasticity. So, start those moisturisers going! Invest… it need not be an expensive brands. There are natural remedy in slowing down the aging process. Apply olive oil on your face or even hair to keep it hydrated. It contains high vitamin E to keep skin glowing and healthy.

3) Eat healthy. Although I am not a saint in watching my diet, I made sure that I take my supplments to keep me going. Drink lots of freshly squeezed fruit juices! Reduce your intake of carbohydrates because as we age, our body’s metabolism rate drops, therefore we digest slower and gain weight faster!

4) Dress your age. You are no longer in the teenage years. Time to grow up and get some proper and decent clothes which does not expose your mid-drift. Basic makeup is a necessity as it is a form of public courteosy. Do you ever want to see your mum in her 40s dressing like she is in her 20s? Well I don’t! Mature ladies should dress with sophistication and taste. If you are not sure what to do about yourself, consult an image professional!

Q: I have never used makeup before, how should I cleaned it off?

A: 72d6ccecc27c370eThe process of cleansing might take just a few minutes longer than the usual water and facial cleanser. Makeup artists will usually put on cream foundation for you which will last throughout the day, hence it’s tougher to clean off. What you can do is to purchase an additional makeup remover especially for eyes and lips. These are delicate areas on the face, be exceptionally careful because of the fine lines that we can create from rubbing too hard against the skin.

For studio or outdoor shoots, artists will apply water proof mascara for you. It’s another challenging task for you if you have no idea how to remove makeup. There are waterproof makeup in the market which usually come in water in oil form (oil forming the higher component in the ingredient) that cleans off eye makeup easily. However buyers beware! Products with too much oil in the ingredient might cause oil seeds also known as milia seeds. Once formed, they might be difficult to remove. Believe me because I have experienced it before when I simply borrowed a “reknown” brand of remover and 1 tiny seed formed almost immediately! I would prefer water base cleansing products for the eyes.

Apply some remover onto the cotton pads. Instead of immediately rubbing the lotion onto the skin, soaks the makeup for about 30seconds and gentle glide. Do not drag the skin. Use a Q-tip to remove the mascara off the lashes and on the skin. Same goes for the lips.

Use the Q-tip to clean between the lines on the lips. After the first cleansing for the makeup, there are usually traces of the cleanser or makeup on the skin. I would do double cleansing with my normal cleanser to make sure everything is gone. To relax my face after a long day, I would apply a moisturizing mask.

Finally! I found a matching coloured nail polish! Copper! I am a rather tan person and this colour suits me best.

Nail polish is a accessory to the body. Match a complimentary nail colour to that of your dress. For instance, if you are wearing a champagne dress, you can opt for a copper nail polish for sophistication. Both colours have a warm yellow tone. Remember to visit your manicurist regularly for that trim and polish. Never go out with chipped nails and fading polish. If you have nail polish on the fingers, do make the effort to fill up the toe nails as well.

If you do apply nail polish very often, do check for fungus on your fingers and toenails after removing your polish. Preferbably let your nails breathe once in a while by going “naked” by doing only nail buffing in order to prevent them from turning yellow.

Do not bite your nails in front of everyone. It shows that you are nervous or simply bad hygiene.

Qn: How do I get rid of dark eyes circles?

Ans: First question is to ask yourself how did you get those eye circles?

Dark eye circles are the formation of blue veins under the eye area. This would be more obvious if you missed a night’s sleep because of the amount of strain that you put them. If you have eye circles are most likely caused by the lack of oxygen supply to the lungs and body.

Other causes includes:

Aging. The thinning of skin around the eye area which makes the blue veins more obvious especially when we age.

Genetics. You will see that dark circles are more visible on people with fair skin.

Iron deficiency. Lack of iron might cause a bluish tint under the eyes.

Home remedies:

Some of the traditional remedies include putting chamomile tea bags (already soaked) eye area and putting cucumber or potatoe slices to cool your tired eyes.

Personally I would like to massage the eye area in a circular motion with eye gel to encourage lymphatic drainage and to prevent sagging lids. I would very much avoid eye cream that is too thick. Always try out the texture of the eye cream on the back of your hands first. The cream should be quickly absorbed into the skin.

Best thing to do? Let your body have sufficient rest. Play some soothing music and perhaps mediate before bed.
